Gift Guide #1 - DSLR Cameras

December 8, 2008 2 Comments

DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras are sure to be one of the hottest gifts this year. With prices dropping and features and quality increasing, many people will be moving to this platform from their point-and-shoot cameras.

One mistake many people make, however, is that they believe that a better camera will give them better pictures. This may be true, but to a very small degree. And depending on what kind of camera you are moving up from, it may not be true at all. For example, if a person is moving to a DSLR from a high quality point-and-shoot, the image quality may be so similar that it is hard to tell the difference. So why spend the money to move move up to a DSLR? It’s about the potential. DSLR’s offer the potential to take better pictures if you know how.

If someone in your family is getting a DSLR this holiday season, the best gift you can give them is knowledge.  I recently purchased my first DSLR.  My first pictures did not look any better than the pictures I had taken with my point-and-shoot.  Then, on Thanksgiving day, one of our guests was a professional photographer.  I spent about an hour with him pointing out and explaining the features on my new camera.  He gave me a very abbreviated lesson on photography and some of the “rules”.  My pictures were at least 50% better because of that. (Thanks John!)  That discussion sparked my interest in learning more.  There is nothing like actually getting better at something that ignites the fire to want to improve.

Inexpensive Gifts To Compliment The Expensive Ones

December 8, 2008 No Comments

It’s that time of year. Traffic sucks. The stores suck. The weather sucks. Oh yeah, it’s the holiday season. That time of year where we try to figure out what to buy friends and family. Some people are great at this, others, well, suck.

One of the hardest things to do is buy presents for someone who either has everything they want or has very expensive tastes. For the later, unless you are made of money (and have been able to hold on to it), you probably worry that any gift you purchase wont be up to snuff for this person.

There is, however an entire category of gifts that are overlooked. The complimentary gift. The gift that goes with something they just bought themselves or are getting for Christmas. In fact, a thoughtful gift that compliments one of these items can be as valuable as the item itself.

Spammers Use Services Like Ping Vine On Twitter (Updated)

June 28, 2009

Please see the update at the end.
So here’s a question.  How many real people are on Twitter.  Real meaning not an account set up by a spammer or a bot account.  A lot less than you might think.  While spending some quality time on Twitter this evening, I came across something interesting.
I found a ton [...]

If You Hate Reading About Twitter on TechCrunch, You’ll Hate This Post Even More!

May 13, 2009

It is said that in truth, there is freedom.  The truth is that TechCrunch does write about Twitter quite often.  But is it really as much as everyone is complaining about?  In the last week (May 7-May12), TechCrunch posted 111 stories.  Of those posts, 22 were Twitter related. I say related because some were about [...]

Why Apple Loves Microsoft

May 12, 2009

Apple loves Microsoft.  It’s a fact.  In fact, Apple is thankful everyday for Microsoft’s very existence.  Why?  Because without Microsoft, Apple could not and would not be Apple.
Apple currently  holds about 10% market share.  Microsoft has pretty much the rest  (except for the tiny fraction that Linux etc. has).  If it were the other way [...]
